In Memory of Doug Russell

LHS is mourning the passing of our colleague and friend, Doug Russell

Doug leaves this world with great memories and success together as one of the first agency leaders we hired to help lead the Boston office.  We hired Doug in March 2018 as SVP, General Manager of LHS. Doug came to LHS from MSL, where he was a SVP for the Healthcare IT practice.  Previous to that role, Doug held various PR and media roles at Schwartz Communications, Weber Group, and corporate roles.  When he was hired, he presented a plan on how he would help build the PR/media relations practice at LHS, helping to build the culture and camaraderie of our agency.  As we look back, Doug was an instrumental leader at LHS and a strong contributor to our growth trajectory.

Doug took a strong interest in LHS Immersion®, our trademarked methodology for messaging and positioning, and he became the Immersion leader, conducting one or two Immersion processes per month.  Doug also loved launching companies.  He launched several Chinese American companies, including the highly successful Lian Bio, among others and worked with Fleishman Hillard in China on the company launches.  He was tenacious and worked tirelessly for client and agency success, including many late night conference calls.  He barely missed a day of work.

We are grateful for Doug’s commitment to LHS, our staff, and clients.  He cared about our people and was a role model for many. We will miss Doug, his writing, direction on media, and overall general management sense for doing what’s right.

Donna LaVoie, President & CEO

“I recall when Doug started at LHS and used his experience and expertise to help shape the many PR and agency processes and procedures. He was dedicated and provided a calm and even keel as we serviced our diverse accounts and tried to solve their communications challenges. He was extremely helpful to me as I was learning the ropes of best agency practices and taught me a thing or two. He was a true mentor to many of our junior staff as he worked with them patiently and groomed them in media relations and account management.”

Sharon Correia

“His passing is difficult to bear, as he was always such a steady and warm presence at LHS. I had the pleasure of working with him on our first Immersion together, and I remember his enthusiasm and desire to bring the best to the client. That never wavered. And neither did his thoughtfulness, patience and kindness to everyone he worked with. He’ll always be a part of us.”

Sharon Choe

“Doug was truly passionate about what we do. He will truly be missed.”

Ella Deych Cerminara

“It’s not often that you truly connect with someone at work and can consider that person really a friend, but Doug was such a person. He was very funny, had wonderful stories to tell, could combine jokes with the demands of work (without compromising the quality of the work), and always was empathetic about the needs of others. He also did a super job with media relations and had creative suggestions of ways to get the most out of various media relationships. He and I did at least a dozen immersions and company launches, probably more, and developed a rhythm to work that worked well for both of us. He was a good writer and smart at analysis. He also was just such a dependable support to the agency, always there, sometimes on the back end, but always with integrity and always with a whole-hearted determination to do what was best for us.”

Harriet Ullman

“I value the time when we worked together, and I learned much from him particularly around immersion and PR. He was a very patient and kind man that will truly be missed.”

 Lisa DeScenza

“Doug was a star. I give Doug the credit and many thanks for hiring me. I’m lucky to have learned from him and he will be missed.”
